Выражение стало популярным в 1958 г., когда британский премьер-министр Гарольд Макмиллан использовал его в Хитроу для того, чтобы сообщить об отставке нескольких приближённых министров накануне своей поездки по странам Британского Содружества. С тех пор в области политики выражение a little local difficulty обозначает какую-либо катастрофу, масштабы которой преуменьшаются.
